Nosferatu - the silent screen classic, with live accompaniment

Saturday 23rd October 2021, 8pm

Nosferatu is one of the silent era’s masterpieces. Its eerie, Gothic feel - and chilling performance from Max Shrek as the vampire - set the template for horror films that followed. Darkly humorous and tender too - this is a story of yearning and the search for fulfilment. Screened in the Great Hall of Tamworth Castle, with live accompaniment, this is a must see boutique event for movie and music buffs. Limited seats available

One of the most famous of all silent movies, F.W. Murnau’s film continues to haunt, and, indeed, terrify, modern audiences with the unshakable power of its images. Murnau captured the deeply-rooted elements of a waking nightmare in this first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.

A real-estate transaction leads Hutter, an intrepid businessman, deep into the superstitious heart of Transylvania. Here he encounters the otherworldly Count Orlok, who soon after embarks upon a cross-continental voyage to take up residence in a distant new land and establish his dominion. Whether the count’s campaign against the plague-wracked populace erupts from satanic decree, erotic compulsion, or the simple impulse of survival, that remains, perhaps, the greatest mystery of all….

Minima are a Bristol-based four-piece group specialising in live accompaniment to screenings of silent films since 2006. Their instrumentation includes cello, double bass, guitars, dulcimer, synthesizer and drum kit, creating an uncompromising and unique live sound. This new reworking of their own original score to Nosferatu teases out the film’s grim humour, immersing the audience in a nightmare world.

“Minima's spine-tingling music clung to each twist of the movie... spellbinding accompaniment.” The Guardian
“A superbly sinister live score by the soundtrack group Minima.” Financial Times
“The atmosphere was absolutely magical… hundreds of people seemed utterly spellbound.” East End Film Festival 2012
“One of the spring’s coolest events… Minima capture the film’s disturbing mood perfectly.” Daily Telegraph
